How To Get To Andorra

London to Principality of andorra La Vella by railroad train...

A French count and a Spanish bishop disagreed over who should rule a small rural enclave high up in the Pyrenees.  They decided to rule jointly, and the result was the Principality of Andorra, the only country in the world whose official language is Catalan.  Today it's no longer rural - its spectacular scenery is home to more than ski resorts and duty-costless perfumeries than you tin can shake a stick at.  Merely if you look difficult enough, the odd flake of historical interest remains...

Andorra has no rails station or drome, just it'southward like shooting fish in a barrel to get there by Eurostar from London to Paris, Intercits de Nuit overnight train from Paris to l'Hospitalet prs l'Andorre (the station closest to Principality of andorra) and and so past route through the Pyrenees into Andorra la Vella.  Alternatively, yous can travel past train to Toulouse then take a bus from Toulouse station to Andorra la Vella.

COVID-xix update:  See COVID-19 updates & travel information.  Eurostar is running a reduced service.  Beyond Paris, railroad train service is shut to normal.

large bullet pointLondon to Andorra La Vella

There are no trains in Principality of andorra, the closest railway station is l'Hospitalet prs l'Andorre, a picayune station in France on the breathtaking local line from Toulouse towards Latour de Carol in the Pyrenees.  An Intercit de Nuit overnight train links Paris with l'Hospitalet every night all twelvemonth circular.  Sadly, the bus from l'Hospitalet to Andorra ceased in 2019, but you can have a taxi, a very scenic ride.  Alternatively, you can get off the night train in Toulouse and take a bus to Andorra from in that location, this takes longer just avoids the expense of a taxi.  If you'd prefer daytime trains to a sleeper, see option ii, which suggests taking Eurostar to Paris, a daytime TGV loftier-speed train to Toulouse so a scheduled bus to Principality of andorra.

Option 1, past overnight train...

London ► Andorra (using a taxi from fifty'Hospitalet)

  • Step 1, travel from London to Paris by Eurostar, normally leaving London St Pancras at 16:22 arriving Paris Gare du Nord at nineteen:57.

Cross Paris by taxi or 1000tro to the Gare d'Austerlitz.

If you lot've time, I'd accept an earlier Eurostar for a more robust connection and to accept dinner in Paris at the Train Bleu restaurant at the Gare de Lyon, so stroll across the bridge over the Seine to the Gare d'Austerlitz.

  • Step two, travel from Paris to l'Hospitalet prsouthward l'Andorre by Intercit de Nuit, leaving Paris Gare d'Austerlitz at 21:xiv & arriving l'Hospitalet prs 50'Andorre at 08:46.

The Intercit de Nuit has 1st class 4-berth couchettes, second grade 6-berth couchettes & 2nd grade reclining seats.

The Paris-L'Hospitalet night railroad train should run daily all year, but there are occasional dates or periods when it doesn't run due to rails piece of work, so check for your date of travel at www.raileurope.com or world wide web.thetrainline.com.  It besides has an annoying habit of opening late for booking, less than the expected iv months ahead, and so don't be too impatient.  If it's non running to 50'Hospitalet on your date of travel, information technology might even so be running from Paris to Toulouse.

  • Step 3, travel from fifty'Hospitalet to Principality of andorra la Vella by road.

A daily connecting motorcoach used to meet the train, operated past La Hispano Andorrana SL, world wide web.andorrabus.com, a very scenic ride through the Pyrenees.  However, later on running for decades this motorbus was discontinued in 2019.  So until or unless this bus is reinstated, you need a taxi.

A taxi all the manner from Fifty'Hospitalet to Principality of andorra la Vella (38 km) costs around 75 & takes around 55 minutes, feedback appreciated.  Phone call Altitud Taxis, 00 376 856255 or 00 33 561644714.

To reduce the cost, take a taxi the 14 km (8 miles, 19 minutes) from fifty'Hospitalet station to Pas de la Casa merely within Andorra, this should toll 35 per taxi.  Call Altitud Taxis, 00 376 856255 or 00 33 561644714.  You then have the hourly local bus (autobus L4) from Pas de la Casa to Andorra le Vella for 6.20, taking 1h05.

London ► Principality of andorra (past autobus from Toulouse)

  • Step i, travel from London to Paris by Eurostar, commonly leaving London St Pancras at 16:22 arriving Paris Gare du Nord at 19:57.

If you've time, I'd take an earlier Eurostar and to have dinner in Paris at the Railroad train Bleu restaurant at the Gare de Lyon, then stroll across the bridge over the Seine to the Gare d'Austerlitz.

Cross Paris by taxi or mtro to the Gare d'Austerlitz.  Have dinner in Paris.

  • Stride 2, travel from Paris to Toulouse by Intercit de Nuit, leaving Paris Gare d'Austerlitz at 21:45 & arriving Toulouse Matabiau at 07:05.

The Intercit de Nuit has 1st class iv-berth couchettes, 2nd course vi-berth couchettes & 2nd form reclining seats.

French dark trains have an annoying addiction of opening late for booking, oft much less than the expected 4 months ahead, so don't exist also impatient.

Tip:  I tin can recommend the breakfast buffet at the Pullman Hotel, a few minutes walk from the station.

  • Step 3, travel from Toulouse to Andorra by jitney.

A bus run past Andbus (www.andorrabybus.com) typically leaves Toulouse at 11:00, arriving Andorra la Vella bus station at 15:00.  Check current times at www.andorrabybus.com, I'd let at least an hour between train and bus in Toulouse in instance of delay.

The bus leaves from bus stand xv inside the Gare Routire (bus station) immediately outside Toulouse Matabiau station.  Simply walk out of the station onto the forecourt and await to your right.  The motorcoach station is the modern edifice with the drinking glass-and-blueish-framework upper section, see the photos beneath.

Andorra ► London (using a taxi to l'Hospitalet)

  • Footstep 1, travel from Andorra to l'Hospitalet prs l'Andorre by road.

For decades a motorcoach ran in connection with the dark train to Paris, run past La Hispano Andorrana SL, world wide web.andorrabus.com and leaving Principality of andorra La Vella at 16:45, Soldeu 17:35, Pas de la Casa 18:fifteen, arriving at fifty'Hospitalet station forecourt at 18:45.  Unfortunately, this bus was discontinued in 2019, meaning you need a taxi for at to the lowest degree role of the journey.

A taxi the whole 38 km from Andorra la Vella to 50'Hospitalet prs l'Andorre station costs effectually 75, journey time 55 minutes.

To reduce the cost. take the hourly local bus (bus L4) from Principality of andorra la Vella motorcoach station to Pas de la Casa close to the French edge, this costs half-dozen.20 and takes 1h05.  Then accept a taxi 14 km (viii miles, 19 minutes) to l'Hospitalet prs l'Andorre station, costing 35.  I recommend pre-booking the taxi, effort Altitud Taxis, 00 376 856255 or 00 33 561644714.

  • Step 2, travel from l'Hospitalet prs l'Andorre to Paris by Intercit de Nuit overnight train, leaving l'Hospitalet prs fifty'Andorre at xix:51, arriving Paris Gare d'Austerlitz at 07:09 side by side morn.

The Intercit de Nuit has 1st grade iv-booth couchettes, 2nd form 6-booth couchettes and reclining seats.

The Fifty'Hospitalet-Paris night railroad train should run every night all year, only in that location may exist odd dates or periods when it doesn't run due to engineering piece of work.  Confirm exact times for your appointment of travel at www.raileurope.com or www.thetrainline.com.

Cantankerous Paris by taxi or mtro to the Gare du Nord.

  • Stride iii, travel from Paris to London by Eurostar, ordinarily leaving Paris Gare du Nord at 09:03 and arriving London St Pancras at ten:39.

Eurostar is currently running a reduced service due to Covid-nineteen, so bank check what Eurostar departures are available on your date of travel at www.raileurope.com or www.thetrainline.com allowing at least 90 minutes in Paris between trains.

Andorra ► London (past bus to Toulouse)

  • Step 1, travel from Andorra to Toulouse by autobus.

A motorcoach run by Andbus (www.andorrabybus.com) typically leaves Andorra la Vella bus station at 15:00, arriving Toulouse Matabiau motorcoach station (side by side to Toulouse Matabiau railway station) at 18:45.  Check current times at www.andorrabybus.com.  Have dinner in Toulouse, there are plenty of places near the station.

  • Step 2, travel from l'Hospitalet prs l'Andorre or Toulouse to Paris by Intercit de Nuit overnight train, leaving Toulouse Matabiau at 22:18, arriving Paris Gare d'Austerlitz at 06:50 next morn.

The Intercit de Nuit has 1st class iv-berth couchettes, second course 6-booth couchettes and reclining seats.

The dark train should run every night all yr, just there may be odd dates or periods when it doesn't run due to engineering work.  Ostend exact times for your date of travel at www.raileurope.com or www.thetrainline.com.

How to purchase tickets

  • Step 1, use www.raileurope.com to book from London or any station in Britain to Paris, add to handbasket, so book Paris to Toulouse or l'Hospitalet-prs-l'Andorre, add together to handbasket & cheque out.

Make sure you allow at least 90 minutes betwixt trains in Paris, ideally more.  Employ the suggested times above equally your guide.

You tin can purchase one-way or return tickets in either direction.  Infants under 4 go free, no ticket necessary, children under 12 travel at the child rate.  There's a small booking fee.  Who are Raileurope.com?

  • Step 2,  if using the bus between Toulouse and Andorra, book the motorcoach online at www.andorrabybus.com.  If using a taxi from l'Hospitalet, pre-book with Altitud Taxis, 00 376 856255 or 00 33 561644714.

  • International credit cards accustomed!  Anyone from any state tin can use www.raileurope.com, every bit all credit cards are accepted and y'all'll usually become a impress-calm or a collect-at-station ticket.

  • Booking opens up to 4 months alee. Eurostar opens upwards to 6 months alee, simply I recommend waiting until your onward French trains open for booking, so that times & prices can be confirmed before you buy a non-refundable not-changeable Eurostar ticket.  Just so yous know, the big annual timetable change happens on the 2nd Dominicus in December, and most years, bookings for dates after this upwards to and including the Christmas & New Yr menses open around mid-October, significantly less than 4 months alee.  Intercit de Nuit overnight railroad train sometimes open significantly less than four months alee, sometimes every bit little every bit 30 or 40, then don't be as well impatient.

  • Fares vary like air fares, and then book equally far alee as you tin:  Fares for Eurostar & French long-distance trains are cheaper in accelerate, more expensive closer to the date of travel, so book equally early as you lot can and search for the cheapest departures.  Think that the cheapest tickets hateful no refunds, no changes.

  • Tip:  Upgrade to 1st class on the French train ofttimes for little extra cost!  Well-nigh booking sites won't allow you mix & match 2d class on Eurostar (on which 1st class is expensive) with 1st class on your onward French train, on which 1st course tin toll little more than second class and tin even be cheaper, considering of the way the pricing quotas work.  With raileurope.com there's an easy solution:  Before running the enquiry, click '+ Add via/stopover', enter Paris Nord (or Lille), select 'specific duration' & enter (say) i hour.  In the search results, instead of showing a total price for London to your French destination, information technology will allow you lot to select a class & cost from London to Paris (or Lille) and a divide class & price from Paris (or Lille) to your final destination.  Meet if there's a inexpensive 1st form fare for your onward French train!

  • Tip:  Don't be agape to split up the booking in Paris.  For complete control, beginning book from your local station to Paris, add to basket, so book from Paris to l'Hospitalet remembering to allow at to the lowest degree hr to cross Paris trains southbound, 90 minutes (to include the Eurostar cheque-in) northbound.  Southbound, I'd allow 90 minutes between trains when catching a sleeper, rather than only 60.  Add to handbasket and checkout.  You tin can hands adjust the Paris time this way, to finish off in Paris or peradventure have dinner.  SNCF's database at present has some sub-standard 40-infinitesimal cross-Paris connections when I'd recommend at least 60 minutes southbound or 90 minutes when catching a sleeper railroad train, splitting the booking allows yous to avoid those.

  • Tip:  If you want sole or dual occupancy of a couchette compartment on a French overnight railroad train:  On French overnight trains you tin can book sole or dual occupancy of a 4-berth couchette compartment, this facility is called Espace Privatif, come across details of the price & how to buy tickets here.  You tin book espace privatif on world wide web.thetrainline.com, you can't do it on raileurope.com.  If an espace privatif  option shows up, fine, if information technology doesn't it'southward unavailable, so the solution is to book all the berths in a compartment past adding phantom child tickets.

  • Train seat numbering plans:  TGV seat numbering plans.  Couchette numbering plans.

Or buy at www.thetrainline.com

  • I recommend www.thetrainline.com for the same reasons every bit Raileurope:  It connects to the Eurostar & SNCF (French, Railways) ticketing systems so you lot can easily book all your tickets in one place, in plain English, in , or $ with overseas credit cards no problem.  Who are Thetrainline.com?

  • Some people prefer www.raileurope.com, others prefer world wide web.thetrainline.com, both are good and should show exactly the same prices, then utilize whichever yous like the look of all-time.

  • Nearly of the same booking tips in the Raileurope advice higher up also apply, except that www.thetrainline.com tin can only sell journeys starting in London, Ebbsfleet or Ashford - simply you can hands add a British domestic train ticket separately as explained here.  If yous want a stopover in Paris, simply book London-Paris & dorsum separately from onward trains.

Or buy at world wide web.eurostar.com & www.sncf-connect.com...

  • Y'all can of course buy tickets from the relevant train operator with no booking fee, merely it's more piece of work and the fares should be the same:

  • Stride 1, book the nighttime train from Paris to Toulouse or l'Hospitalet at the French Railways website world wide web.sncf-connect.com.  Yous impress your own ticket.  Check the Paris difference/arrival times before booking the Eurostar.

  • Footstep 2, book the Eurostar from London to Paris.  Stay on www.sncf-connect.com (which keeps both bookings together) or go to www.eurostar.com and book a suitable Eurostar from London to Paris & dorsum.  Utilize the Eurostar times on this page as a guide, but past all means choose an earlier Eurostar from London or a later Eurostar back from Paris if it has cheaper fares bachelor or if you'd like to finish off in Paris.  You print out your ain ticket, or can load it into the Eurostar app.  Easy!

How to buy tickets by phone...

  • Information technology's ameliorate to purchase online, as you avert phone booking fees and tin can see for yourself which departures are cheapest for each stage of the journey.  Online booking is possible 24/vii, but near telephone booking agencies only work role hours on weekdays.

  • If y'all want to call someone, here's a list if U.k. ticketing agencies with phone numbers & opening hours.  For a journey betwixt the UK & Principality of andorra I'd call Ffestiniog Travel, International Rail or Trainseurope.  Book early on for the cheapest prices, ideally 2-3 months ahead, as prices increase shut to difference, just like air fares.  Tickets will usually exist emailed to y'all as east-tickets, so there's no postage cost or delay.

What's the journey similar?

Each couchette rider gets a small-scale canteen of mineral h2o, earplugs (if you really feel yous demand them), and tissues.  There's a security lock on the door which cannot be opened from outside, and staff are on hand if y'all need them.  Only passengers with tickets and reservations are allowed on board, and there are minimal stops betwixt midnight and 06:00 to ensure a safety and smooth journey through the night.  Men and women share the same compartments in couchettes, as you don't normally fully undress, only on French dark trains, women travelling lonely can ask for a place in a ladies-only compartment.  The railroad train also has reclining seats, simply a couchette allows you lot to slumber properly and is recommended.

An annual policy is ordinarily cheapest even for only 2 or 3 trips a yr, I use an almanac policy myself.  Don't expect travel insurance to bail you out of every missed connexion, see the communication on missed connections here.  Hither are some suggested insurers, I get a little commission if you buy through these links, feedback always welcome.
